We're back to reality today, after a wonderful weekend with Grey's grandparents. They arrived Friday afternoon and we went to dinner that evening at a chicken wing restaurant (no, not the one you're thinking of, but just as bad) with scantily clad young waitresses. I'm pretty sure Pops chose the restaurant, and then he didn't even eat wings! Anyways, our waitress was a big fan of Greyson's and she flirted with him the whole night - it was a little creepy but really cute to see how he reacted to her. He even reached out to touch her shiny pantyhose at one point.
The next day we did some chores and ran to the store in the morning and put Greyson down for a nice nap before our busy afternoon. He woke up just in time to get dressed and head off to the zoo. The Central Florida Zoo is nothing to write home about, but it's a perfect first zoo for Greyson - not too big but full of interesting things to see. Sometimes he was more excited to point out the animals' toy balls in the exhibits, but he was still enthralled by many of the animals. He got to grab a zebu bull by the nose, pet a goat, and reach into the emu enclosure. He said "dird" while staring at the vultures, and crouched down to look through the bars at the elephants. It was a great trip, even though we missed the last train ride by about 2 minutes.
After the zoo, it was down to the Sanford waterfront to watch some boats and some more dirds (Greyson's new word for birds) for a while before our dinner reservation. Dinner was at the Willow Tree Cafe, a special request for Greyson's Pops. Pops got Grey to eat some new fruits, a trick we're very grateful for. He's even started eating melon, apple, and pineapple at home now, yipee! He was mesmerized by the accordion music, got to hear his Grandpops speaking Russian with the waitress, and got a belly full of black forest cake for dessert. Lucky kid. The tired and stuffed Goose passed out in the car on the way home, woke up long enough for a diaper change and bottle before crashing for the night. Mike and I got to go out without him, although we ended up seeing people who hadn't seen him in a while and missed his sweet face.
On Sunday we played in the leaves out front and Greyson had two breakfasts before his nap. When he woke up his Jo Grandma and Pops were gone, maybe that's why he was fussy all afternoon. He loves them sooo much. I think he'll have a great time next month when he goes to stay with them for a long weekend. Just after this weekend they have him pointing out his nose (and saying nose!), giving hugs, and saying car, - I bet he'll be speaking in complete sentences when we pick him up from their care.

What's good for the Goose...
Dinner time has become a challenge for us. We're thankful that Greyson loves some healthy food - grapes, cheese, wheat bread, etc. But that seems to be all that he wants to eat lately. He has been turning his nose up at some of his old favorites lately, even chicken and macaroni and cheese. I'm trying to have a good attitude. It's my job to provide healthy food, it's his job to eat it. I can't make him, and I can't take it personally. But it sure is hard to watch him throw yummy food overboard every night. I had a momentary fit and tried to scold him for throwing food once last week, realized quickly that it was a loosing battle, and resigned myself to picking up food scraps each evening. For a while at least... this too shall pass :-)
A few weeks back, Greyson was eating swedish meatballs (he still loves ground beef, I think) and I had given him a fork to experiment with. I put some of the meatball on the fork and let him have it. He quickly grew frustrated with the fork because he couldn't pull the meat off with his fingers in order to eat it. Silly Goose. He refuses anything that comes his way on a fork or spoon, he insists on feeding himself. Oh, but he does love the yogurt in a tube from Panera!
One of Greysons's favorite things in his room right now is a family photo. It's a picture of Mike, Greyson and I, along with my parents and grandparents. Four generations together, taken on Greyson's third day of life. We pull it down daily and point to each family member. Greyson is fascinated with his Nana, and can even say her name!
A few other recent obsessions are the Roomba and the attic. I think both of these things scare him a bit. We run the Roomba more now that it has a new battery, and Grey loves to push his buttons (literally) but gets a little freaked out when the vacuum starts to move around the dining room. He also got a little wigged out when Daddy disappeared into the ceiling of the garage last weekend. So now whenever he sees the Roomba or the attic (which is often!) he waves and says "bye bye" to both of them. Not sure if he wants them to go away, or if he sees people go bye bye into the attic, or what the rationale is... but it's darned cute.
And we're making verbal progress now, but mostly with animals sounds - his favorite thing! This morning on the way to school he was reading his curious george book in the backseat and I got him to bark along with me while reading about the doggie. He imitated me "maaaa"-ing like a baby goat last night, and I think I heard him moooo once. Maybe he'll say words one day, but for now he's a baby dr. doolittle. Oh, come to think of it he does say ball, mama, dada, nana, and la (for lamb).

Silly Goose
What's new with the Goose? Yesterday he started stacking blocks. For so many of his milestones I cannot point to an exact date... I'm not 100% sure when he smiled at someone for the first time, when he laughed, what counted as his first day of crawling or walking. And who knows if he's been doing new tricks as daycare for weeks before he does them at home! I'm not a stickler for exact dates, but it's nice to know approximations for when he started doing new things. We've got a baby book, and I filled out a lot of the info in the beginning, but I'm more likely to rely on this blog as a record of accomplishments... which is why I try to remember to post about new things.
Mike was outside covering plants last night (we actually had a freeze) and Greyson and I were playing with his block set. I always stack them and he knocks them down. Until yesterday. He actually stacked them 6 blocks high. I was so goofy, clapping and yelling. He probably wondered what all the fuss was. I had to call his Grandpops to tell him the news, since he got Greyson the blocks for his birthday and he's always interested in his grandson's latest adventures.
We're so looking forward to a visit from Grandpops and Jo Grandma this weekend. We might even go to the zoo before our yummy German dinner on Saturday.

Happy New Year!
Greyson slept through it all... we spent New Year's Eve at our friends' house and Greyson went to bed in his play yard in their (rather large) bathroom, so as not to be disturbed by all the merry-making. At midnight we went in to whisper happy new year to the sleeping babies, they seem even more innocent and precious when they're sleeping through something important. Mike was a sweetheart and let me sleep in on January 1, then we spent the day taking turns napping ;-)
Right now we're still in our in/out open/closed phase. Greyson is great at opening and closing doors, drawers, cabinets, lids, toilets, boxes, etc. It's a great time for shape sorters and toys that hold things. And so my life has become a never-ending attempt to "keep all the pieces together." I know this will end eventually but I have yet to give up the battle. Grey also loves putting things in his diaper pail, our garbage can, his laundry bin, etc. Which is nice when it comes time to clean up, but you have to keep a close eye on the contents of the trash receptacles in the house. I finally convinced Mike to install the toilet lock after a few fingers and a hairbrush ended up in the potty.
Our big eating streak has not ended, although vegetables are becoming less appreciated. Meat and bread and grapes, he'd be happy to live off that. Add some cheddar bunnies and maybe a few sweet potato puffs for variety and life would be grand.
Mike and I are starting to prepare ourselves, and hopefully Greyson, for our first time apart. We'll be travelling to Key West in February/March for a long weekend and Grey will be staying in Venice with my parents. We suspect he'll be uber-well-behaved and maybe even learn some new good behaviors, but it's still nerve wracking to think of being apart and whether he'll miss us terribly or forget about us.
