Happy New Yrrrr!

There are a few words that Greyson has trouble pronouncing, as I'm sure is typical of most toddlers. It took him a few days to master "hospital" after he got his train set which has a little hospital building and ambulance. It was hos-ti-pul for a while but he practiced and practiced and now says it with no problem.

We've notice a few other words, like the infamous "Happy New Yurrrr!" that he so proudly declared for weeks. Eventually I had him say it so many times, he started catching on that it was funny and he exaggerated his mis-pronunciation to make it even cuter.

The latest examples to pop up are Sea Wurrrld and skurrrrrrul (squirrel). He tried and tried to get squirrel right. I overheard him in the office talking to Mike.

G: I saw a baby skwurrrr...

M: squirrel

G: I saw a baby skurrrr....

M: squirrel

G: I saw a baby skwullll...

M: squirrel

G (noticing me): Mama, I saw a baby chipmunk!!

There's an animal in trouble...

We've had a few encounters with animals in trouble lately. Greyson loves the show Wonderpets and likes to watch the little baby animals get rescued. Unfortunately not all of our recent run-ins went so well.

First, I heard the story of Grey finding a dead frog on the playground at school and bringing it to his teacher. I think she yelped pretty good, and he talked about the dead frog for days.

Then, Greyson was helping me check the mail one day. He likes to open the mail box, reach in, grab a piece of mail, give it to me, and close the box. There were many envelopes in the box so we had to keep repeating the process until we got to the last letter. Greyson reached in, and came up with a lizard dangling by the tail. I admit I yelped pretty loudly myself, did a little dance, and then giggled at our spectacle on the front porch. That lizard suffered the same fate as the frog - he must have starved when he couldn't escape the mailbox. Where were the Wonderpets then?!

Finally, we were at the park one Sunday feeding the ducks, walking through the grass on our way to the bridge when Mike heard little cries for help and noticed a baby squirrel on the ground. We must have stepped on, rolled over, other otherwise disturbed him because he was making quite a racket once we passed. We stood there unsure for a moment, discouraging the ibis from pecking at him but afraid to reach out and claim responsibility. I dread situations like this, because I'm an animal lover but not sure what the right thing to do is... especially with little Greyson in tow. Do we set the squirrel somewhere safer, out of traffic but possibly risk contaminating him with our scent? Do we take the squirrel to a vet, who will probably not want to deal with him? Do we take the squirrel home, to raise or rescue or ???

Thankfully, as all of these thoughts swirled through my head, we noticed an adult squirrel coming down out of the nearest tree, just a few feet away and probably where the baby had fallen from. For a moment I thought it was just after our bread but eventually it circled the baby squirrel closer and closer and picked him up and carried him to safety (or so I like to believe). A real live animal rescue, how often do you see that?

G is still talking about the baby squirrel he saw in the park, and I'm still singing the theme to Wonderpets.

Pizza update

Greyson's favorite food is now pizza, as alluded to in the last post. If we ask him what he wants for dinner, he says "pizza!" If we ask him what they had for lunch at school, he says "pizza!" If we ask him where he's going with his wagon/truck/train/teddy bear he says "Chuck E. Cheese!" I'm not sure where he learned about Chuck E. Cheese, but it's his favorite place to "go." He's never actually been there, I'm saving that for a special occasion. Honestly, I'm not even sure if he knows they have pizza there.

When we went to Venice for the holidays, we took Grey out for his first meal at a Thai restaurant. He enjoyed all of the photos in the menu, and when the waitress approached the table, he looked up at her and ordered for himself. "Pizza!"

The Christmas season begins...

The weekend after we got our lovely tree, my family gathered for a holiday celebration. A little early, but there's never a bad time to get together, eat, and exchange gifts. Greyson looooves his Uncle Mike, Aunt Jenny, and of course Jo and Pops. He asks about them all the time and was very excited to see them. He was still napping when his Aunt and Uncle arrived, but soon joined us in the kitchen for the Christmas hors d'oeuvres feast. Uncle Mike even ditched his diet for the night, we had such an awesome spread!

Greyson's gift from Jo and Pops was revealed earlier in the day, to his great delight. He is now the proud owner of a train table and train set. He plays with his hand-me-down Thomas trains on it, even though they don't quite fit. He also got an engineer's hat, bandana, and train whistle to complete the ensemble. Already in train heaven, Greyson opened a few more gifts and really got the hang of it. For the rest of the weekend he asked, "open more presents?"

After all those appetizers, Greyson was ready to eat the real meal - pizza. For a long time he acted like he didn't like pizza, but he has recently fallen back in love with the toddler favorite. And like many toddler moms, I'm happy with that, because it has tomato sauce. That's one of the only vegetables he allows to pass his lips at home. And cooked tomatoes are really good for you, right?!

It was a lovely evening, complete with cherry and key lime pie for dessert. We all ate too much and enjoyed the company.

G spent the rest of the weekend relaxing with Jo and Pops, frequenting a local dive-y diner, playing at the park and being disappointed that Santa did not arrive on a fire truck at the right time, and busting his mouth on a table, but thankfully healing up in just a few days. It was a good start to the season, and there would be lots more gift-unwrapping in the following weeks.

Santa's Christmas Tree Forest

This year, I decided we should cut down our own tree for Christmas. We haven't had a tree at our house the past few years, but it's time to start making traditions with Greyson. I heard about Santa's Christmas Tree Forest near Eustis, that they have a petting zoo and hayride in addition to the tree farm. It sounded right up our alley.

So finally, less than two weeks before Christmas, we found some time to make the trip. When Grey got up from his nap on Sunday afternoon, we were on our way! Our first order of business was visiting the animals in the petting area. There were chickens, pigs, baby pygmy goats (sooooo cute!), horses, and a donkey. Boy that donkey was big, compared to Aunt Gail's miniature donkey Seabiscuit. Greyson rode Scooter the pony, his guide told us he talked to Scooter the whole way, and then we were off for the hayride into the forest.

The tractor takes you around the Christmas tree fields until you see a spot where you want to get out and explore. Then you find a tree, cut it down, and wait for the tractor to come back for you and your tree. We did all that, even stopping to take a family photo for our holiday cards. Greyson was eager to get back on the hayride and eventually get back to his horsies. He wanted to go on another ride!

We picked our perfect little tree, took it back, had it measured, shaken (gets the bugs and loose needles off), tagged and netted. Then we went for one more ride. This time Greyson rode the big horse, Smokey. I walked along beside him and made the horse nervous, but G enjoyed his ride and would have stayed there all night. It was getting dark though and we headed back home with our tree.

The next day we set our tree up in the living room, Greyson helped me decorate, and his gift from Aunt Gail arrived, just a day too late. He would have made quite the picture riding the horses and ponies in his new cowboy hat!
